Chapter Twelve

Johnny Lee

A sun-dappled day beamed down over the land inhabited by Capstone's Dude Ranch, the best,

certainly warmest, day yet since the gang had arrived at the ranch. The bright sun was busy

climbing to its highest point in the sky, a beaming yellow orb that glistened over trees and

mountaintops and created sparkles in the flowing waters of the trickling stream. Johnny Lee

Capstone was atop his horse, Railway, and like every other time he rode her, he had the sense of

freedom washing over him, as though they could both run with the currents of the wind and take

flight, transporting them to places far beyond the real world, to a places that only existed in

dreams. As untethered as he felt to the land, there was something ... someone holding him back.

He knew who it was, and he had no objection. Because on this day, as he journeyed upward to his

favorite location nestled amidst the Smoky Mountains, Johnny Lee Capstone wasn't alone.

He'd brought Thrice Montgomery along for the ride.

“So, just how far is this place? I mean, I thought our big trip started tomorrow.”

Thrice was riding a dark-colored mare named Sebastiana, and in between clops of his iron

hooves against the hard-packed earth and the gentle neighing of the frisky Railway, the two men

had attempted little conversation. The silence between them only added to nature's lush allure.

But they had been traveling in the brutal, hot sun for over an hour, and Johnny Lee imagined

Thrice thinking there was no end in sight.

“We're almost there, and trust me, Thrice, what I'm about to show you is worth the long trek.

Give it another fifteen minutes—it's up a steep hill, so we have to be careful. Sebastian can handle

it, no doubt, it's you I'm worried about.”

“I'll be fine. I've handled myself well enough since arriving.”

“Yes, you have,” Johnny Lee said. “Though no limo would make it through these trails.”

“Could you give the limo jokes a rest? No one else is around, and I'm not laughing.”

Johnny Lee was, though, and the happy sound carried them all the way up the next incline.

Railway and Sebastian easily took the tricky turns, the stream guiding them. The horses knew rest

was near, and they kicked it into high gear so they could be rewarded, food and water at the

ready. As they emerged through a copse of low-lying trees, a magnificent sight came into focus: a

wide-open valley awash with lush green grass, and in the distance, the glass-like surface of a

mountain-made lake. Surrounding them like a cocoon were the Smoky Mountains, their jagged

tips representing a contest of nature: which of them could best scrape the sky. Johnny Lee sighed

with contentment; this was his favorite place in the world, where he came to think, to recharge his

batteries, to settle the inner conflicts of his mind.

He stole a look back at Thrice, saw the wonder cross his face.

“Okay, New York City definitely does not look like this,” he said.

“I would hope not, that's among the last places I'd ever want to see,” Johnny Lee said, his

voice taking on more than a hint of Southern drawl.
